With the change of weather, we have to do the dreaded task of changing our wardrobe, and many also take the opportunity to make changes at home and do a thorough cleaning of the whole house to return from vacation and start the school year with everything ready.

The cleaning of the bedroom, for example, should be thorough, considering that decorative elements like rugs and curtains can affect our health if they aren’t hygienically clean. Furthermore, poor organization and lack of cleanliness negatively impact sleep and overall rest.
Let’s see how important it is to clean the room where we sleep and how we should do it for proper sleep hygiene.
First of all
Before diving headfirst into cleaning the room, let’s see what we should do to save time and make the job much more efficient.
Ventilate before cleaning: Open the windows before cleaning the room to eliminate odors and refresh the air. This will enhance the feeling of freshness once you’ve finished cleaning.
Organization: Take this opportunity to remove anything you no longer need and tidy up clothes, books, or anything else that’s out of place. Get rid of anything that’s broken or in poor condition. This is a great first step in cleaning your room and organizing the space.
Everything you need: vacuum cleaner, cleaning products for each surface (wood, glass, etc.) and microfiber cloths will be your companions in thoroughly cleaning the room.
Carpets, dust collectors
You don’t need to deep clean your carpets every week, but if it’s necessary for a thorough room cleaning, give them a good once-over. For everyday cleaning, vacuuming a couple of times a week, especially if you have pets, will be sufficient.
Every three or four months when you do your deep cleaning of the room, take the opportunity to do it on your carpets as well.
How to deep clean carpets
For deep cleaning of carpets you will need:
Vacuum cleaner (preferably with a carpet brush): vacuum in several directions to lift all the trapped dirt.
Carpet detergent or a specific carpet cleaner and a soft bristle brush: for stains use a special carpet detergent and rub the solution in with the brush, taking care not to soak the fabric too much.
- Warm water: to rinse off the soap; if you leave any residue, the carpet will get dirty faster.
- Clean towels: To dry the rinse water, you can use a fan or leave the carpet to dry in a well-ventilated place.
Baking soda (optional) and white vinegar (optional): in case you want to use natural products instead of detergents.
You can also use baking soda to get rid of bad odors. Sprinkle it on the carpet and leave it for a few hours or overnight, then vacuum to remove it.
Don’t forget the mattress
For the most thorough room cleaning possible, you should also clean the mattress . Even though it’s protected by the mattress protector and fitted sheet, the mattress still traps dirt, dust mites, and dust that can cause allergies and discomfort, and also affect sleep.
To clean your mattress and make it like new, you need:
Vacuum cleaner with upholstery attachment: once you have removed the bedding, you should vacuum the mattress thoroughly, using the upholstery tool if you have one.
Baking soda, white vinegar and water: for stains you can use a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water and for the toughest stains, you can make a paste of water and baking soda, rub it on the stain, let it sit and rub to remove it completely.
A clean cloth, sponge, or soft-bristled brush to scrub away any stains.
Mild detergent (optional) and upholstery cleaner (optional). If you prefer to use specific products instead of baking soda and white vinegar.
Turn it over if possible; this will help it retain its shape.
To eliminate any bad odor, you just have to use the same trick as to remove bad odors from carpets.
Take the opportunity to wash the duvets and bedding thoroughly as well; the room should be completely cleaned.
And the curtains
Curtains can be the most cumbersome items when we do a deep clean of the room.
If the curtains are machine washable, wash them and hang them to dry while still wet. This will help smooth them out if you hate ironing. Alternatively, you can dry them and then iron them for a perfect finish.
If the curtain fabric is more delicate, it’s best to rely on professionals and take your curtains to the dry cleaners.
For more frequent cleaning, vacuum the curtains and if the fabrics are very delicate, use a microfiber mop to gently wipe them down and remove dust.
Tips for tidying up your room while cleaning
For a room to be as thoroughly clean as possible, tidiness isn’t the only factor. You can reduce your stress and improve your sleep if your room is hygienically clean, but also very well organized.
- Scent the room: once you have completely cleaned the room, scent the room with your favorite aromas; the feeling of cleanliness will surely intensify.
- Relaxing colors: pastel blues and greens, beige and other neutral colors can help you rest and relax; opt for these colors in bedding, walls and cushions or the rest of the decoration.
- Organize your spaces and closets: if you’re changing your wardrobe, take the opportunity to restructure the spaces for better storage of your clothes.
- Eliminate the unnecessary: the less cluttered the room is, the more effective the cleaning will be.
With all these tips, you’re sure to get your room perfectly clean so you can enjoy a restful sleep.
