Apple crumble is a very traditional English pastry recipe. It has a base of apple compote with cinnamon, and a top layer of sweet, cinnamon-flavored sprinkles with a crunchy, almost cookie-like texture. It’s a simple dessert, but one that will surprise you.
What could be the original recipe for apple crumble? There are many versions, but I still make this one, since the one I’m sharing in this post is the one a colleague of my father’s sent us from London. It uses simple ingredients like butter, flour, sugar, and cinnamon. It’s a very simple dessert, but incredibly delicious. Especially delightful when served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.
For an even more exquisite and British flavor, choose apples with a touch of tartness, such as Pink Lady, Reineta, Granny Smith, or Chantecler. Also, when making this recipe, try to make your crumble toppings quite irregular. This way, the different sizes of dough balls will have different textures, some being crispier than others. This is the charm of this apple dessert.
If you want to bake something special yet easy, this apple crumble is a great choice. The recipe is much simpler than an apple pie or a classic apple tart, and you can adapt it to many different types and sizes of baking pans you might have at home. I hope you enjoy making and eating it as much as I do.
