How to Make Icing? (Ready in a Few Minutes)

Icing toppings make our desserts look irresistible, but they also add a texture and a touch of flavor that completes the experience.

At CrazyEspresso.com, we tell you how to make icing at home with very common ingredients in just 4 steps.

Ingredients

These are the ingredients you will need for our icing recipe:

  • 200g of icing sugar
  • 1 egg white
  • Lemon juice or drops

Instructions

Let’s see how to make icing by following some very simple steps:

  1. The first step is to sift the powdered sugar to achieve a smooth and uniform texture. To do this, place a sieve over a bowl and carefully pour the sugar into the sieve. Gently tap the side of the sieve to allow the powdered sugar to filter through, and once finished,  press any remaining particles through the sieve with a spoon. The goal is to eliminate any lumps so that the icing is smooth and homogeneous.
  2. Now we’ll need a separate bowl to beat the egg white. We’ll do this at room temperature so that it starts to foam. While beating the egg white, we’ll gradually add the sifted powdered sugar from the previous step so that it incorporates.
  3. Next, add the lemon juice to give the mixture a citrusy note that will enhance the flavor. To do this, gradually add the lemon juice while continuing to whisk the mixture.
  4. The final step in this homemade glaze recipe is adjusting the consistency. If the glaze is too thick,  add more lemon juice, or water if you prefer not to add a more acidic flavor, until it reaches the perfect consistency.

Tips for Using Icing

With the previous steps, we’ll have the icing ready. Now we’re going to give you some tips for applying the icing so that the final finish is perfect:

  • Always apply it to a dessert that you have previously refrigerated; otherwise the glaze may melt.
  • If you want to give it a delicious look and decorate the dessert with shapes,  use a piping bag to make drawings with the icing.
  • You can play around with flavorings to create different types of glazes, like the delicious coffee glaze.
  • We can also use colorings to create desserts that are visually appealing.
  • And our last tip: give your glaze a final touch by adding cinnamon,  chocolate shavings, or some fruit.

Now that we’ve seen how to make homemade icing, you have no excuse not to add a sweet and special touch to every dessert. What’s more, the icing can last up to a week if stored in the refrigerator, so you can have it ready to use with your desserts for several days.
