Vanilla has a comforting, warm smell.
In aromatherapy, vanilla is a highly valued scent for its relaxing qualities as a natural antidepressant, although it is also used as an aromatic stimulant. This is due to the sweetness of its aroma and its volatile compounds.

One of the most important properties we can highlight is the calming quality of its aroma: if there is something that worries you, fill the room with the scent of vanilla, and you will see the possible solution more clearly.
Several studies explain that the reason for its calming effect is that it manages to evoke positive emotions from our childhood that are in our memory.
PRESENT IN ALMOST ALL PERFUMES
Vanilla is present in many perfumes.
Royal vanilla is an expensive spice, almost as expensive as saffron, and until recently was only available to a select few.
Authentic vanilla comes from an orchid native to Mexico. The most prized variety is cultivated in Madagascar, takes three years to flower, and must be hand-pollinated within 24 hours of blooming. The vanilla fruit is a narrow, black pod, from whose seeds the essence is extracted.
Approximately 33% of all vanilla produced worldwide is used in perfume manufacturing. In some fragrances, it’s the dominant scent, while in others it’s just a barely perceptible nuance, adding a touch of sweetness and familiarity without you consciously noticing it. This is due to its ability to enhance the longevity of other notes.
Want to smell like a warm, sweet, cozy vanilla bean? You’re in luck—vanilla is one of the easiest scents to layer and wear, from subtle skin scent to decadent gourmand.
How to Smell Like Vanilla?
1. Start with Vanilla Body Care (The Base Layer)
This creates a foundation so the scent lasts all day.
- Body Wash or Bar Soap: Look for “vanilla bean,” “Madagascar vanilla,” or “warm vanilla sugar.”
- Body Scrub: Use a vanilla-scented scrub 2-3x a week for a smooth, scent-trapping canvas.
- Lotion or Body Butter: This is the most important step. Vanilla lotion is moisturizing and makes the scent cling to your skin for hours. Apply right after your shower.
Product ideas: Tree Hut Vanilla Shea Butter Scrub & Lotion, Native Vanilla & Coconut Body Wash, The Body Shop Vanilla Pumpkin (seasonal) or Shea body butter.
2. Choose Your Vanilla Fragrance (The Main Event)
You have three main types:
A. Perfume/Eau de Parfum (EDP) – Most long-lasting
Look for these vanilla-dominant scents:
- Kayali Vanilla | 28 – A cult-favorite, smoky, sweet, brown-sugar vanilla.
- Nest New York Madagascar Vanilla Perfume Oil – Pure, warm, slightly boozy vanilla. Great for layering.
- Billie Eilish Eilish No. 1 – A cozy, cocoa-powder vanilla with soft woods.
- Commodity Milk (Expressive) – Toasted marshmallow and woody vanilla.
- Outremer Vanille – An affordable, pure cotton-candy-like vanilla extract scent.
B. Body Spray – Light, affordable, good for reapplication
- Bath & Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar (classic, soft) or Vanilla Bean Noel (sweet, frosting-like).
- Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa ’62 (salty caramel vanilla pistachio) or ’40 (black plum vanilla).
C. Vanilla Essential Oil or Fragrance Oil – For DIY & purest scent
- Dilute vanilla oleoresin (thick, dark) or vanilla CO2 extract in a carrier oil like jojoba or fractionated coconut oil. Never apply undiluted essential oil to skin.
3. Layer Like a Pro (The “Vanilla Cloud” Method)
For a scent that turns heads:
- Shower with vanilla body wash.
- Apply vanilla lotion all over while skin is damp.
- Dab vanilla oil on pulse points: wrists, inner elbows, behind ears, collarbone, behind knees.
- Spray perfume over those same spots (don’t rub—it breaks the scent).
- Finish with a light mist of body spray over your clothes and hair.
Bonus: Spray a vanilla body spray on your hairbrush before brushing—it’s a gentle, lasting scent veil.
4. Choose Your “Vanilla Vibe”
Not all vanillas smell the same. Pick your style:
| If you want… | Look for notes like… | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Sweet & Edible (cake/cookie) | Brown sugar, caramel, marshmallow, benzoin | Outremer Vanille, Philosophy Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere |
| Warm & Cozy (skin-like) | Musk, sandalwood, amber, cashmeran | Nemat Vanilla Musk oil, Dedcool Taunt |
| Boozy & Rich | Rum, bourbon, patchouli, tobacco | Kayali Vanilla Royale, Maison Margiela Jazz Club |
| Floral Vanilla | Jasmine, orchid, coconut | Van Cleef & Arpels Orchidée Vanille |
| Smoky & Dark | Incense, black pepper, oud | Byredo Gypsy Water (vanilla as a soft base) |
5. Make it Last All Day
- Moisturize first. Vanilla binds to oils, not dry skin.
- Apply to clothes (vanilla perfumes often stain light fabrics, so test first).
- Carry a travel atomizer or mini lotion to reapply.
- Store perfumes in a cool, dark drawer—light and heat ruin vanilla notes.
Quick & Easy Vanilla Routine (Budget-Friendly)
Drugstore version:
- Shower: Native Vanilla & Coconut Body Wash
- Moisturize: Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer (original has a light vanilla scent)
- Scent: Bath & Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar Body Spray
- Boost: Dab a drop of vanilla extract (yes, the baking kind) on pulse points only if skin isn’t sensitive—but this is sticky and alcohol-based, so use cautiously.
A Word of Warning on Pure Vanilla Extract
While it smells divine, pure vanilla extract (from the grocery store) contains alcohol and sugar. It can:
- Dry out or irritate skin
- Attract ants or bees if it’s sticky
- Leave a brown stain on clothes or light skin
It’s fine for a quick test, but real fragrance oils or body products are safer and last longer.
Final Pro Tip: Vanilla is a base note—it smells even better when it mixes with your natural chemistry after about 20 minutes. Don’t keep sniffing your wrist immediately; let it settle. And if you want people to notice you, layer unscented lotion + vanilla oil + vanilla perfume. You’ll smell like a dreamy bakery in the best way possible.
VANILLA BOURBON
Vanilla bourbon or Madagascar bourbon is a name commonly used to refer to vanilla produced in Madagascar and other regions bathed by the Indian Ocean, such as the Comoros Island or Reunion Island.
Its origin refers to the Bourbon dynasty, since the island of Reunion has been a French overseas department since 1764. Not surprisingly, Reunion was once even known as the island of Bourbon.
Bourbon from Madagascar is the highest quality natural vanilla extract on the market.
LEGEND ABOUT VANILLA
Its original name is written in Totonac, it is called Xanath, and it is known worldwide as vanilla.
It has had such a profound impact on the history and culture of Veracruz that there is a whole cult surrounding this orchid, and it has great commercial and economic value.
Furthermore, it has inspired a legend that tells how Xanath, the young daughter of the goddess of fertility in Mexico, was born, who fell in love with a young Totonac man.
Since she could not marry him due to his divine nature, they were killed in their attempt to escape.
In that gloomy place where the princes were sacrificed, the grass that grew there began to wither and sprouted prodigiously into a bush. In time, when it reached a considerable height, a climbing plant grew alongside its trunk, its flower, a white orchid, blooming with such firmness and care that it resembled the arms of a woman.
The news reached the ears of the priests and all the people, who had no doubt that the bush covered in flowers and entwined among the branches of that beautiful plant were none other than the princess and her beloved prince.
The beautiful and elegant orchid has since been the object of fervent worship. Because of its remarkable transformation, it was declared a sacred plant and became a divine offering in Totonac shrines.
From the blood and love of a princess was born vanilla, which in Totonac is called Xanath (hidden flower).

What are the best scents for your home?
When designing your home, you can be very meticulous about fabrics, styles, and decorative choices, but we often forget that our home should also smell good. The sense of smell is one of the strongest senses, with the power to influence our emotions and evoke long-forgotten memories.
However, through sensory adaptation, you can become accustomed to the smells in your home, giving the impression that everything is fine. Unfortunately, there’s nothing more unpleasant for guests than entering a house and noticing smells you hadn’t noticed.
To avoid this scenario, use aromatherapy techniques that will help you create pleasant memories at home with friends and loved ones. Here are 7 scents for your home for different occasions.
Lemon
The scent of lemon oil is said to improve mood and relieve fatigue. Much like drinking a cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade in summer, the aroma of this citrus fruit can give you a brief energy boost.
The fragrance of lemon oil can mask unpleasant cooking smells, pet odors, and even eliminate the lingering smell of a wet dog. The aroma of lemon oil is associated with clean environments, making it ideal for public and private kitchens, bathrooms, and restrooms.
To enjoy its natural freshness in the living room, place a lemongrass diffuser where it will be most effective. Get rid of stale odors by cleaning affected surfaces and fabrics with detergents containing lemon extract.
Mint
The sweet, spicy scent of mint is a pest repellent, and, as with the aroma of lemon, many people also report feeling more energetic and experiencing an improved mood. Therefore, it’s not surprising that mint scents are very common ingredients in perfumes and cleaning products.
Mint scents are popular among people who work in mentally demanding jobs and need to focus, concentrate, and think deeply. Consequently, they are often used for studying, researching, reading, and preparing academic or work-related presentations.
Mint is a lovely scent for the home year-round, but it truly enhances the Christmas holiday atmosphere. Sprinkle it lightly around your house by placing an indoor mint plant on your desk or using mint-scented candles for a clean and fresh aroma.
Lavender
Lavender is one of the most popular scents on the market due to its purported calming properties. This essential oil is said to relieve emotional stress, making it one of the best home fragrances for living rooms and bedrooms.
You can use a diffuser with lavender essential oil at home to release aromas that could help calm and relax you.
However, be careful to avoid the risk of fire when using scented candles in the bedroom. To help spread the benefits of lavender throughout your home, consider using cleaning products that incorporate this fragrance.
Jasmine
Jasmine is a feminine, elegant, and exotic essential oil, and like lavender, it can be helpful when you want to unwind after a stressful day. The scent of jasmine creates a pleasant and rich atmosphere, which is believed to have an aphrodisiac effect.
For this reason, jasmine is an ideal scent for a romantic evening with your partner. To diffuse it generously, you can use essential oil diffusers or several sticks with a strong aroma. Of course, don’t forget to buy some red roses to create a beautiful atmosphere and a special moment.
Sandalwood
Genuine sandalwood essential oil is rare due to its long and expensive extraction process. However, it has a masculine and exotic fragrance that is highly appreciated by both men and women for its lush, sensual, woody aroma.
To quickly get rid of unpleasant odors, place sandalwood blends in appropriate spots around the living room. You can also spray a few drops of the essential oil into the vacuum cleaner bag, which will help diffuse the fragrance as you vacuum before your guests arrive.
The fragrance is particularly useful for the winter months, as the warm scent of sandalwood can create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere to counteract the cold outside.
Vanilla
Vanilla is a sweet, creamy, and comforting scent that can be used throughout the house. Its warm fragrance has the ability to lift the spirits in living rooms and bedrooms.
The aroma of vanilla, when mixed with the scent of baked cakes or cookies, evokes childhood memories, perfect for family gatherings and evenings. Its widespread use in ice cream and yogurt brands establishes a link between pleasant moments and the aroma of vanilla.
To help diffuse the aroma throughout your home, use candles that emit a strong vanilla scent. You can replicate this effect using vanilla-scented oil warmers or a spray air freshener if you’re in a hurry.
Fresh cotton
The scent of fresh cotton has evocative and comforting properties. A fragrance that accurately captures the smell of sun-dried sheets is especially invigorating and a perfect way to evoke the feeling of fresh spring air.
However, the fragrance isn’t made from cotton, but from a blend of jasmine, lavender, lemon, cedar, and a few other scents. Use this gentle aroma at home to create a clean and happy atmosphere in your bedroom and guest rooms.
To help diffuse this aroma, place aroma diffusers in the desired rooms or use a vacuum cleaner. You can also use scented candles and a liquid cotton blend to create the desired ambiance.
Important tips for the smell of your home
We want to share the following essential tips to improve your experience with home fragrances:
- Study the components of a fragrance because they are often sold as mixed blends rather than pure oils, in order to make sure you get exactly what you want.
- When choosing home fragrances, you should consider the opinions of your loved ones, especially when choosing a scent for your private space, as people perceive smells differently.
- If someone in your home has allergies, choose safe scents and diffusion methods to eliminate the possibility of harmful exposure.
- If you wish to buy powerful incense or scented candles, choose those with an intense fragrance directly in the box, without lighting them.
- Scented candles pose a fire risk and should therefore be placed in appropriate locations, particularly if you live alone, have children, or pets.
- Note that the wicks of some scented candles can release smoke when they are extinguished, which may trigger a sensitive smoke detector.
- You can enjoy natural aromas without exposure to chemicals by having an indoor plant that emits your favorite scent.
- Cleaning the house and opening the windows is also an effective method for creating a pleasant environment in the home.
- Due to sensory adaptation, your nose may “stop working” in relation to your favorite smell at home, which can be misinterpreted as a loss of potency.
- To find out what your house really smells like, reset your olfactory system by leaving your house, smelling coffee beans or your clothes, and then going back inside.
