Our experts in Facial Aesthetic Medicine answer these and other questions about how to achieve a more defined face.

How to slim your face?

The appearance of a round face is a frequent reason for consultation among our Facial Aesthetic Medicine patients. Many of them report that they associate the roundness of their face with a perception of being heavier than they actually are.

In most cases, when patients adopt healthy eating habits and correct their excess weight, the face loses volume in proportion to the rest of the body.

However, in other cases, facial roundness is not always related to the patient’s weight, but rather to other causes, such as congenital fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise.

To determine if it is possible to slim the face, it is necessary to know the origin of its rounded appearance, which can be due to various factors:

  • The patient’s own bone structure
  • Fat and tissue that has descended and accumulated in the chin or jawline
  • Fatty compartments or Bichat’s balls
  • Highly developed masseter muscles
  • Certain medications that can cause fluid retention

Our cosmetic doctors study each patient’s face and, once they diagnose the type of aesthetic problem that results in an excessively round face, they select the most appropriate technique to refine it.

What is the most effective treatment for slimming the face?

Among the most effective facial slimming treatments available at IML are:

  • Bichectomy
  • Reduce a double chin
  • Define the jawline
  • Enhance cheekbones and chin

Bichectomy

Bichectomy is the removal of the Bichat’s fat pads, deposits of fat located in the cheeks. These fat pads do not decrease in size when the patient diets or exercises.

When these fat deposits reach a larger volume than usual, they can reduce definition in the face.

At IML, the fat deposits are removed from inside the mouth and are dried using a laser, so the scar is not visible on the face and the technique is outpatient and minimally invasive.

Reduce a double chin

double chin is the excess skin and/or fat under the chin. This volume under the chin can create the appearance of an overly round face or influence the perception of a patient’s overall weight, although these two factors are not necessarily related.

To reduce a double chin, it is necessary to determine what type of double chin each patient has, since there are different types, for example:

  • A double chin due to mild or moderate fat accumulation can be corrected by injections of deoxycholic acid, a substance that destroys adipocytes and releases lipids.
  • A pronounced double chin, caused by fat accumulation and skin laxity due to aging, can be corrected with a facelift. If the excess fat and skin is significant, the facelift can be combined with facial lipolaser, a method that precedes lipovaser.

Define the jawline

Sometimes, patients present with excess fat and sagging tissue along the jawline, which blurs the contour of the mid-face. In these cases, Lift Express, a mini-facelift, can be performed to correct a double chin and reposition the skin to define the jawline.

Enhance cheekbones and chin

In some patients, enhancing features like the cheekbones and chin can help refine the face. Our doctors can use various fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, for this purpose. It is essential that the doctor has a thorough understanding of both facial structures and the characteristics of the filler material to be injected, in order to achieve the most natural and flattering result for the patient.

So, can you slim your face with exercise? Facial yoga has not been proven to slim the face. In our experience, when facial volume is due to genetic or constitutional factors—that is, factors not related to the patient’s weight—the best results are obtained with facial aesthetic medicine treatments and minimally invasive cosmetic surgery. The outcome will depend on the chosen technique, based on each patient’s individual needs.
